Very much a residential area,
full of charm and character, Cannaregio is bounded to the
north by the Lagoon (Fondamente Nuove is the main starting
point for vaporetti to the islands), and to the
south by a long sweep of the Grand Canal. Most prized
of the many lovely palazzi along here is the Ca'
d'Oro, with it pink, sugar-spun Venetian Gothic
facade. The bulk of tourists are drawn to Lista di
Spagna and Strada Nova, two sections of the route from the
station to the Rialto, leaving the rest of the district
delightfully quiet at all times of the year. Don't
miss the Ghetto, the world's oldest, nor the wonderfully
over-the-top interior of Gesuiti, near Fondamente
Nuove.
