A marvellously varied
district, Castello
includes the mighty Riva degli Schiavoni, whose many hotels
enjoy unrivalled views across the Lagoon to the island of
San Giorgio Maggiore, with its landmark church of the same
name by Palladio. Behind the waterfront lies a
different Venice: quiet, dusty squares, pretty canals and
lovely paintings - principally in San Giovanni in Bragora,
Santa Maria Formosa, San Zaccaria, Scuola di San Giorgio
degli Schiavoni, Fondazione Querini Stampalia and Santi
Giovannie Paolo. To the west is Arsenale, from where
sprang the city's great maritime prowess.
